Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder, dating from 1528, kept in the Uffizi, Florence, Italy. There are other paintings by the same artist with the same name depicting these characters either together in a double portrait, or separately in a pair of portraits, for example, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, in the Courtauld Gallery in London, in the Bildenden Kunst Museum in Leipzig and at the Art Institute of Chicago.
Two biblical ancestors are depicted on two different panels on a dark background, standing on barely visible ground. Both hold two small twigs that cover their genitals. Eve holds a traditional apple, and the serpent descends to her from above from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam is depicted scratching the right parietal part of his head.
